휴전이 이루어진 1953년 여름의 비무장지대. 엄마를 찾아 방황하던 영아(주민아)라는 소녀가 개울에 빠지자 한 소년(이영관)이 구해준다. 소년은 MP 철모를 쓰고 누더기가 된 북한군 군복에 훈장을 주렁주렁 단데다 권총까지 차고 있다. 폐허가 된 그곳에서 의지가지없는 둘은 서로에게 의지하고, 영아의 엄마를 찾아 같이 가기로 한다. 배가 고픈 영아를 위해 소년은 감자를 찾고, 반찬 할 개구리를 잡는다. 북한군들이 멀리서 다가오자 둘은 급히 도망가고...
